Flute Moves: About

Over the last twenty years I have strived to find ways that I can expand my teaching to support my student's connection between their body, ears, and eyes. Dalcroze believed that the body was the first instrument and Dr. Suzuki strived for the development of a "beautiful tone, beautiful heart." Laban looks at the world through movement and how our body interacts with our inner, outer and personal kinesphere and interacts the world through the lens of 'sensing, intuiting, thinking, & feeling.'

This research, conducted as part of my PhD Research at the University of Luxembourg under the guidance of Prof. Luc Nijs is the beginning of a journey into where these worlds intersect, how I can help students learn to play the flute while in movement - in a playful, impactful, and rich environment, and grow in my own practice as a researcher and educator.

What Your Child Will Learn:
  • Essential techniques for producing great first sounds on the flute
  • Connecting musicianship concepts to flute learning through movement-based games and activities
  • Developing healthy practice habits
  • Learning both by ear and practicing music literacy
  • Progressing from first notes to the first pieces of repertoire

Course Benefits:
  • Students will receive a beginning flute as part of this course.
  • Families are invited to join the last few minutes of each class to learn how to support their child's music practice at home.
  • Support materials including handouts and videos will be provided to guide at-home practice.
  • The course sets a unified foundation for continued success in flute studies at the Conservatoire de Musique in Esch-sur-Alzette.
